Working with Nature - Organic Farming

Dormouse with blackberriesOMSCo farmers do not use the artificial chemical pesticides and fertilisers that can harm wild flowers, birds, butterflies and other wildlife.

Organic farmers continually adapt and adopt a range of practices that protect and encourage wildlife by providing cover and food for insects, birds and mammals.

Organic farmers are not allowed to plough up traditional meadows. They also leave a one metre strip around field boundaries as a wildlife refuge.

Rather than use artificial factory-produced fertilisers which can  leave the soil depleted of nutrients, organic farmers use plants like clover which ''fix'' nitrogen from the air and so help to build up the carbon in the soil and keep it naturally fertile. A recent Defra-funded study shows that organic farming is 38 percent more energy efficient than non-organic farming.
