TEACHERS AND PUPILS EXPERIENCE THE WILD WEST (COUNTRY)

This press release was posted on : 22nd February 2010

A dynamic new education resource has been launched today at www.teach-organic.org.uk, designed in consultation with primary school teachers to help educate their pupils throughout the region about the world of organic dairy farming – how organic milk is produced, how animals are cared for and the benefits of organic dairy farms to our health and the environment.  The site comes from The Organic Milk Cooperative (OMSCo) who represent more than 500 organic farmers from around the UK.

Packed full of useful information and teaching materials including activity sheets, organic recipes and a year in the life of an organic dairy cow, the site is aimed at teachers following the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Content can be woven into lessons as diverse as Geography and Environmental Studies through to Personal Social Education (PSE) and Home Economics.

To bring the organic experience to life, teachers and pupils from the Bristol area are being offered the chance to experience life on an organic dairy farm with a unique Hedgerow Safari. The Safaris will take place on selected farms across the region and will help pupils uncover the secret wildlife, flora and fauna which thrive on organic farms. The day begins with an introduction from one of OMSCo’s farming experts, before the group heads out into the fields in search of wonderful West Country wildlife. Wellies and waterproofs are a must!

Gill Crane, OMSCo Communications Manager commented; “We are delighted with our newly launched resource and hope it will encourage teachers to visit our farms and help young people to understand more about where milk comes from as well as the benefits of organic farming. We’ve taken a lot of time to make sure the website is interactive and useful and our consultant teachers have helped us to ensure it’s useable. The fact that Hedgerow Safari’s are free of charge will hopefully encourage an enthusiastic response.”
