OMSCo CELEBRATES RECORD-BREAKING SALES OF ORGANIC MILK
This press release was posted on : 03rd February 2010
Latest data published by TNS shows organic milk sales in the year to December hit an all time high*, with growth accelerating in the final quarter. In a year which saw a steep decline in organic sales in many other organic categories, organic milk continues to buck the trend, with latest growth of more than 5%** year on year, a figure which would represent an additional 8m litres of bottled milk sales.
The Organic Milk Suppliers Co-Operative (OMSCo), representing over 500 organic dairy farmers and the lion’s share of the organic milk on supermarket shelves, is quietly optimistic, having invested £1m in 2009 in TV, press and PR to highlight the benefits of organic milk to consumers.
Richard Hampton, the co-operative’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “A low price premium and a clear range of benefits have been key factors in driving sales of organic milk.
“Milk is one of the key entry points into the organic category and costs the average family of four less than £1 per week to make the switch. Motivated by benefits to health, environment and animal welfare, consumers are recognising that milk is an affordable way to go organic everyday, even when their grocery budgets are squeezed. As the grocery sector thaws there’s no reason why we shouldn’t see even better stats in the coming months, especially as we plan to increase our marketing spend to maintain this momentum.”
