ORGANIC DAIRY FESTIVAL COMES TO SOUTH WEST
This press release was posted on : 26th September 2003
The South West's organic dairy farmers want more schools in the region to take part in the OMSCo Organic Dairy Festival which will be held 6 - 10 October. They are holding the event to help children understand where their food comes from and to link their local environment with familiar foods. Over 1,500 kids are already taking part across the South West - including Our Lady of the Rosary School at Lawrence Weston in Bristol.
Bristol farmer, Lesley Hurford who is taking part said, "Many children don't really make the link between the milk they drink and dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt, and don't understand that top quality healthy organic milk is made without using artificial pesticides, GM cattle feed or routine use of antibiotics. We think that the OMSCo Organic Dairy Festival is a great opportunity for children to learn how organic milk and cheese is made, and how it travels from the farms across the South West to their breakfast table."
The event is being held by the Organic Milk Suppliers Cooperative (OMSCo), the UK's largest and longest established organic dairy co-operative which is based in the South West.
Dairy farming is a major industry in the South West and the area is a centre of organic production, producing top quality milk which is sold across the country or turned into organic cheese, butter and yogurt.
OMSCo is offering primary school teachers free information packs comprising balloons, stickers, wall posters, colouring-in sheets, and materials explaining how organic milk is produced and how it is turned into cheese, butter and yogurt. Subject to availability, OMSCo is also offering samples of delicious Lye Cross organic cheddar and assemblies by organic dairy farmers across the South West who have bravely volunteered to talk to children about how organic milk is produced.
